Silat is an ancient martial art developed in Malaysia, Indonesia and across Southeast Asia to defend against invading armies who were fighting to control the Silk Road. Each region has its own style lead by a Mahaguru (Grandmaster) who is not only the head of the martial arts style, but is the head of the family (Clan). We are proud to be members of Macan Hitam under Mahaguru Richard Crabbe-deBordes who has invited our instructor, Sam Slocum to be a member of his family (clan) and head of Macan Hitam for South Texas. We practice Macan Hitam and Harimou Berantai Silat styles.
Macan Hitam (pron. Machan Heetaam) is a derived style of Harimau Minangkebau (Minag Tiger) as taught to Mahaguru Richard Crabbe-deBordes by General A. M. Hanafi and his son Maha Guru Adityo Mataram Hanafi.
Harimau Berantai (Chained Tiger) is a Javanese to Malaysian transplant style. It was popularized by the late Professor Jak Othman and is now headed by Guru Amir Izzat and supported by Cigku Azhan Hizazi. It is a system based on speed and accuracy, and focuses on the many different weapons that are found throughout Malaysia and Indonesia.
Golden Eagle Martial Arts is proud to be a member of the Macan Hitam Clan. Our Silat instructor Sam Slocum has more than 30 years of martial arts experience. He has traveled to Southeast Asia several times and trained with numerous Mahagurus (Grandmasters). He is a member of the Macan Hitam Clan under Mahaguru Richard Crabbe-deBordes.
Nearly fifteen years ago Mahaguru deBordes asked for and received permission from Mahaguru Hanafi to take the system into field practice to help refine the system for modern battlefields, making it one of the most effective and combat tested systems currently practiced.
Macan Hitam is an essentially complete fighting system. It includes striking, grappling, ground fighting, weapons, and has a strong focus on practical safety and security mentality and practices. The system is challenging and requires a tremendous commitment of time and effort, but the rewards are well worth it.
